Product Overview
SS 304 Hot Forged Parts
SS 304 hot forged parts are produced by heating billets to 1050–1200°C (within the austenitic single-phase field) and deforming them in closed dies on hydraulic or mechanical presses. Hot forging of SS 304 results in refined austenitic grain structure, elimination of casting porosity and segregation, and improved mechanical properties. SS 304 hot forged parts include SS 304 forged flanges (weld-neck, slip-on, blind, socket-weld, threaded), SS 304 forged valve bodies, SS 304 forged pipe fittings (elbows, tees, reducers), SS 304 forged pump impeller hubs, SS 304 forged shaft sleeves, SS 304 forged housings, SS 304 forged cable gland bodies, and SS 304 forged brackets. After hot forging, parts are solution-annealed at 1040–1080°C and water-quenched to restore full corrosion resistance and achieve a fully austenitic microstructure per ASTM A182 F304.
SS 304 Cold Forged Parts
SS 304 cold forging is performed at room temperature using high-tonnage presses (200–2,000 tonnes), achieving extremely tight dimensional tolerances (IT6–IT8, ±0.02–0.05 mm) and superior surface finish (Ra 1.6–3.2 µm) without heat treatment. Cold forging of SS 304 utilises the work-hardening behaviour of austenitic stainless steel: the initial yield strength of approximately 210 MPa increases to over 500–600 MPa after cold working, producing parts with exceptional strength. SS 304 cold forged parts include SS 304 cold forged precision connectors, SS 304 cold forged hex nuts, SS 304 cold forged bolts, SS 304 cold forged standoffs, SS 304 cold forged cable gland inserts, SS 304 cold forged earthing pins, SS 304 cold forged ferrules, SS 304 cold forged rivets, SS 304 cold forged contact pins, and SS 304 cold forged terminal inserts. Cold forged SS 304 parts offer the highest strength-to-weight ratio for stainless steel fasteners and connectors.

SS 304 Mechanical Properties (Annealed, per ASTM A182 F304)
Tensile strength (UTS): ≥ 515 MPa. Proof stress (0.2% offset): ≥ 205 MPa. Elongation (in 50 mm): ≥ 40%. Reduction of area: ≥ 50%. Hardness: ≤ 187 HB (≤ 92 HRB). Charpy V-notch impact: typically 150–200 J at room temperature. These properties make SS 304 forged parts ideal for low- and moderate-temperature service from –196°C (cryogenic with special qualification) to +870°C (continuous) and +925°C (intermittent).
SS 304 Cold Work Strengthening
One of the unique advantages of SS 304 is its capacity for work hardening. During cold forging, the austenite partially transforms to martensite under high strain, dramatically increasing strength. At 10–20% cold reduction, yield strength increases from 210 MPa to 350–450 MPa. At 40–60% cold reduction (typical for cold forged fasteners), yield strength reaches 550–650 MPa, exceeding many alloy steels. This makes SS 304 cold forged parts the preferred choice for high-strength stainless fasteners without the need for precipitation hardening alloys.
Corrosion Resistance of SS 304 Forgings
SS 304 resists oxidation, atmospheric corrosion, food product acids, mild chemicals, and most water environments. Forging followed by solution annealing ensures a uniform chromium-depleted zone is eliminated and the passive layer is fully restored. Passivation per ASTM A967 is standard. SS 304 is not recommended for environments with high chloride concentrations (seawater, de-icing salts) or strong reducing acids; for those, SS 316L is specified. Sensitisation (carbide precipitation) is prevented by maintaining carbon below 0.08% (SS 304) or using SS 304L (max 0.03% C) for welded assemblies.
Post-Forge Heat Treatment Options
Solution annealing (SA): 1040–1080°C, rapid water quench – standard for hot forged SS 304 parts. Stress relief: 425–480°C (not recommended for sensitisation-sensitive applications). Sub-zero treatment: not applicable for austenitic grades. Descaling: acid pickling in HNO3/HF bath per ASTM A380. Passivation: citric acid or nitric acid per ASTM A967 / ASTM A380. Electropolishing available for hygienic, medical, and food-grade applications.
Welding and Fabrication of SS 304 Forgings
SS 304 forged components are fully weldable by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW (stick), SAW, and laser welding. Recommended filler: ER308L (TIG/MIG) or E308L-16 (stick). No preheat required; interpass temperature max 150°C. Post-weld annealing recommended for heavy sections. For welded pressure systems, SS 304L forgings (ASTM A182 F304L) are specified to prevent sensitisation and intergranular corrosion in the HAZ.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SS 304 hot forged and cold forged parts?
Hot forged SS 304 parts are produced above 1050°C, giving excellent formability, near-net shape, and annealed mechanical properties (UTS ≥ 515 MPa, 0.2% PS ≥ 205 MPa). Cold forged SS 304 parts are produced at room temperature with work hardening, giving much higher strength (yield 500–650 MPa) and tighter tolerances (±0.02 mm), suited for fasteners, pins, and small precision components.
Is SS 304 the right grade for my application?
SS 304 is suitable for most general industrial, food, pharmaceutical, and water service applications. Use SS 316L instead if you have chloride-rich environments (seawater, marine, coastal), concentrated acidic media, or high-temperature sulphurous environments. Use SS 304L (low carbon) for welded assemblies to prevent sensitisation.
What is the maximum service temperature for SS 304 forged parts?
SS 304 forged parts are suitable for continuous service up to 870°C (oxidising atmospheres). For service above 425°C with intermittent cooling, use SS 304H (higher carbon) to prevent sigma phase embrittlement. For cryogenic service down to –196°C, SS 304 is fully suitable without impact test qualification at most pressure vessel codes.
What standards do your SS 304 forged flanges meet?
Our SS 304 forged flanges conform to ASME B16.5 (NPS ½”–24″), ASME B16.47 (NPS 26″–60″), EN 1092-1, DIN 2631–2638, JIS B2220, and BS 4504. Material per ASTM A182 F304. Certificates per EN 10204 Type 3.1 standard, Type 3.2 available on request.
Can you supply SS 304 cold forged fasteners to ISO 3506 A2-80?
Yes. We supply SS 304 cold forged fasteners to ISO 3506 Grade A2-70 (standard) and A2-80 (high tensile, cold worked). A2-80 bolts have proof stress ≥ 640 MPa, UTS ≥ 800 MPa. Sizes M3 to M36; inch sizes 3/16″ to 1½” UNC/UNF. Hex bolts, stud bolts, hex nuts, socket cap screws, and custom fasteners.
What surface finish can you achieve on SS 304 forged parts?
As hot forged: Ra 3.2–12.5 µm. After CNC machining: Ra 0.8–3.2 µm. After electropolishing: Ra 0.2–0.8 µm. Electropolished SS 304 forged parts are used in pharmaceutical, food, and high-purity water applications. Cold forged surfaces: Ra 1.6–3.2 µm (as-forged).
Do you supply solution-annealed SS 304 forgings?
Yes. All hot forged SS 304 parts are standard solution-annealed (1040–1080°C, water quench) to restore full corrosion resistance and achieve a fully austenitic microstructure per ASTM A182 F304. Heat treatment certificates and hardness test reports are provided with each shipment.
What is the lead time for SS 304 forged parts?
Standard products (existing tooling): 4–6 weeks from order confirmation. Custom components (new dies): 8–12 weeks. Expedited production for critical requirements: contact our sales team for availability.
