What Is C95500 Aluminum Bronze?
C95500 is a cast nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) containing nominally 81% copper, 11% aluminium, 4% iron and 4% nickel. The aluminium forms a tenacious, self‑healing alumina (Al2O3) surface film that gives the alloy its outstanding resistance to seawater, brine, mildly acidic media and cavitation. The iron refines grain structure and raises strength; the nickel content of 3.0–5.5% is metallurgically critical, because it stabilises the microstructure and suppresses the continuous eutectoid β phase that causes dealuminification (selective phase corrosion) in lower‑grade aluminium bronzes.
The result is a copper alloy with the tensile strength of a medium‑carbon steel, the seawater life of a nickel alloy, and the non‑sparking, non‑magnetic and antimicrobial behaviour of copper. In heat‑treated TQ50 condition, C95500 castings reach 760 N/mm² (110 ksi) tensile strength — the highest of any commonly cast copper alloy.
Key Properties of C95500 / CDA 955 Castings
- Very high tensile and yield strength — up to 760 N/mm² (110 ksi) after heat treatment
- Excellent resistance to seawater, chloride and brackish water corrosion
- Superior cavitation and erosion‑corrosion resistance in high‑velocity flow
- Excellent galling, wear and abrasion resistance under heavy load
- High resistance to dealuminification thanks to 3–5.5% nickel
- Non‑sparking — suitable for ATEX / Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas
- Essentially non‑magnetic (low magnetic permeability, typically < 1.05 μ)
- Retains useful mechanical strength up to approximately 400 °C
- Good weldability with ERCuNiAl / AWS A5.7 filler and good machinability (rating ~50)
- Excellent fatigue and impact resistance, including at sub‑zero temperatures

Heat Treatment of C95500 (TQ50 Temper)
C95500 responds strongly to heat treatment, unlike most cast copper alloys. Our standard TQ50 cycle is:
- Solution anneal: heat to 860–900 °C, soak according to section thickness (typically 1 hour per 25 mm)
- Quench: rapid water quench to develop the hardened martensitic β′ structure
- Temper: re‑heat to 550–650 °C and hold, then air cool, to restore ductility and toughness
The TQ50 cycle raises tensile strength from 620 to 760 N/mm² and hardness from ~180 to ~220 HB while retaining 5% minimum elongation. A stress‑relief anneal at 550–600 °C is also available for weld‑repaired or heavily machined castings, and is strongly recommended for components destined for long‑term seawater immersion.
Casting Processes for C95500 Bronze Components
Sand Casting
Green sand and no‑bake (furan) resin sand moulding for one‑offs through to production runs, and for large or complex geometries such as pump casings, valve bodies, stern gear and structural marine hardware. Casting weights from 0.1 kg to 1500 kg.
Centrifugal Casting
Horizontal and vertical centrifugal casting produces exceptionally dense, porosity‑free, directionally solidified cylindrical C95500 parts — bushings, sleeves, wear rings, bearing shells, worm wheel blanks and slide rings — where hydrostatic integrity and fatigue life are critical.
Gravity Die Casting (Permanent Mould)
For repeat production of medium‑volume CDA 955 parts. Faster solidification gives finer grain structure, better as‑cast mechanical properties, tighter dimensional repeatability and reduced machining allowance.
Shell Moulding & Investment Casting
For near‑net‑shape precision components with fine detail, thin sections, superior surface finish (Ra 3.2–6.3 µm as‑cast) and minimal secondary machining.
Machining, Welding & Fabrication Guidance
- Machinability: rating 50 (free‑cutting brass = 100). Use rigid setups, positive rake carbide tooling (K10/K20), moderate speeds and generous coolant; C95500 work‑hardens if dwelled or rubbed.
- Welding: GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) with AWS A5.7 ERCuNiAl‑A2 / ERCuAl‑A2 filler. Preheat 150–200 °C for heavy sections, control interpass temperature, and stress‑relieve after welding.
- Brazing: not recommended — the stable alumina film inhibits wetting.
- Galvanic compatibility: C95500 sits close to 316 stainless and Monel in the seawater galvanic series and is generally compatible; isolate from aluminium, zinc and carbon steel in wetted assemblies.
- Surface finishes: as‑cast, shot‑blasted, pickled, polished, or machined to drawing tolerance.

Frequently Asked Questions About C95500 Aluminum Bronze Casting
What is the price of C95500 aluminum bronze casting?
Our indicative price for C95500 / CDA 955 bronze castings is US$ 16.70 per Kg, FOB India, for plain as‑cast components. Final pricing depends on casting weight, tooling, machining scope, heat treatment and testing requirements, and on prevailing LME copper and nickel prices.
What is the difference between C95500 and C95800?
Both are nickel aluminium bronzes. C95500 contains about 11% aluminium and is optimised for strength and hardness, reaching 760 N/mm² tensile after TQ50 heat treatment. C95800 contains about 9% aluminium plus manganese and is the dedicated marine grade, offering the best long‑term resistance to seawater corrosion and dealuminification. Specify C95500 for heavily loaded bearings and wear parts; C95800 for permanently submerged propellers, pump casings and valve bodies.
Is C95500 the same as CDA 955?
Yes. CDA 955 is the Copper Development Association designation for the same alloy identified as UNS C95500. It is also known as ASTM B148 Alloy 9D, nickel aluminium bronze, NAB, and by the nominal composition shorthand 81‑4‑4‑11.
Is C95500 aluminum bronze non‑sparking?
Yes. Like other copper‑based aluminium bronzes, C95500 is classed as non‑sparking and is widely used for tools, fittings and valve components in ATEX and hazardous‑area installations in oil, gas and petrochemical plants.
Can C95500 castings be welded?
Yes. C95500 has good weldability using GTAW or GMAW with AWS A5.7 ERCuNiAl‑A2 or ERCuAl‑A2 filler metal. Preheat of 150–200 °C is recommended for heavy sections, and a post‑weld stress relief at 550–600 °C should follow, particularly for seawater service. Brazing is not recommended.
What are the ASTM standards for C95500 castings?
C95500 castings are covered by ASTM B148 (aluminium bronze sand castings), ASTM B505/B505M (continuous castings), ASTM B271 (centrifugal castings) and ASTM B763 (valve castings), along with SAE J461/J462, QQ‑C‑390 Alloy G3 and MIL‑B‑16033 Class 4.
Does C95500 resist seawater corrosion?
Yes. The protective alumina film gives excellent resistance to seawater, brackish water and brine, and the 3–5.5% nickel content suppresses the microstructural conditions that lead to dealuminification. It also performs very well against cavitation and erosion‑corrosion in high‑velocity flow, which is why it is used for impellers, wear rings and propeller components.
What is the minimum order quantity, and can you work to our drawing?
Our standard minimum order quantity is 50 Kg, with smaller quantities and single prototype castings quoted on request. We manufacture entirely to customer drawings, samples or 3D models, including full reverse engineering of obsolete parts.
Do you supply material test certificates?
Yes. EN 10204 3.1 certificates covering chemical composition and mechanical test results are supplied as standard with every consignment. Third‑party 3.2 certification through Lloyd’s Register, DNV, Bureau Veritas, ABS, TUV or SGS can be arranged.
Which countries do you export C95500 castings to?
We regularly export C95500 and CDA 955 bronze castings to the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, as well as the Middle East and Africa.
