Product Overview
Cold Forging Process for Brass Parts
Cold forging of brass is performed at room temperature (or below 150°C, a fraction of the brass recrystallisation temperature) using high-pressure mechanical or hydraulic presses (100–2,000 tonne). The process deforms the brass billet, slug, or wire blank into the desired shape without heat input, resulting in work hardening of the material and significantly improved mechanical properties. Cold forging methods applied to brass include: cold heading (for bolts, screws, rivets, and headed parts), cold extrusion (for tubular sleeves, ferrules, and hollow bodies), cold pressing (for flat components and inserts), cold piercing, cold sizing, and combined cold forging operations on multi-station progressive presses. Cold forging of brass produces near-net-shape components with tolerances of IT6–IT8, eliminating or minimising machining, reducing material waste by 10–30%, and achieving production rates of 60–600 parts per minute on automated presses.
Brass Cold Headed Parts
Cold heading is used to produce brass fasteners and headed components: brass hex bolts, brass socket cap screws, brass machine screws, brass wood screws, brass self-tapping screws, brass set screws, brass carriage bolts, brass round head bolts, brass hex socket head cap screws, brass cheese head screws, brass pan head screws, and brass countersunk screws. Cold heading produces fasteners with a continuous grain flow from head to shank, resulting in higher fatigue strength and impact resistance compared to machined fasteners. Thread form is produced by thread rolling (not cutting), further increasing thread fatigue resistance. Grade range: free-cutting brass CW614N/C36000 standard; tensile strength 350–500 MPa; available unplated, nickel-plated, tin-plated, or chrome-plated.
Brass Cold Extruded Parts
Cold extrusion of brass produces hollow tubular, cup-shaped, and complex cross-section components: brass cold extruded cable gland shells, brass cold extruded conduit coupling bodies, brass cold extruded ferrule sleeves, brass cold extruded terminal bodies, brass cold extruded connector housings, brass cold extruded valve sleeves, brass cold extruded compression fitting bodies, brass cold extruded plug bodies, brass cold extruded bushing blanks, and brass cold extruded cartridge bodies. Cold extrusion can produce wall thicknesses as thin as 0.5 mm on brass components up to 80 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length. After cold extrusion, components are CNC-machined to final dimensions, or used in the as-extruded condition where tolerances are sufficient.

Work Hardening and Mechanical Properties
Cold forging of CW614N brass (CZ121, C38500) increases tensile strength from the annealed value of ~380 MPa to 420–500 MPa after cold working, without any heat treatment. Yield strength increases from ~140 MPa (annealed) to 200–300 MPa (cold forged). Hardness increases from 70–80 HB to 90–110 HB. This improvement in mechanical properties is retained in service provided the component is not re-annealed. Cold forged brass screws and bolts exhibit significantly better thread strip resistance than their machined counterparts due to rolled threads on cold-headed blanks.
Dimensional Consistency for High-Volume Production
Cold forging tooling (punches and dies in hardened tool steel, D2 or M2 grade) maintains dimensional consistency over production runs of 100,000 to 10 million pieces with SPC-controlled press parameters. Critical dimensions show Cpk ≥ 1.33 as standard; Cpk ≥ 1.67 achievable with process optimisation. Automatic in-process gauging with SPC feedback ensures dimensional drift is detected and corrected in real time. This consistency makes cold forged brass components ideal for high-volume OEM assembly lines requiring reliable, consistent parts.
Surface Quality and Finish
Brass cold forged surfaces are smooth (Ra 1.6–6.3 µm as-forged) due to the compressive nature of the process and lubricated die contact. No oxidation or scale is present (unlike hot forging). After CNC machining of key features, surfaces achieve Ra 0.4–3.2 µm. Electroplating (nickel, chrome, tin) is applied directly to the cold forged and cleaned surface without any shot-blasting or acid pickling needed for scale removal. The clean surface of cold forged brass reduces plating chemical consumption and produces more uniform coating thickness.
Eco-Friendly Manufacturing
Cold forging is inherently more energy-efficient than hot forging (no heating fuel) or machining from bar (less material waste, shorter cycle time). Cold forged brass generates less scrap: near-net-shape production means 10–30% less brass consumed per part vs. bar machining. Our cold forging facility uses recycled brass slugs and closed-loop lubricant systems to minimise environmental impact. All process chemicals and lubricants are REACH-registered and biodegradable where possible.
Plating and Surface Treatment Options
Brass cold forged parts are available with: bright nickel plating (5–25 µm, EN ISO 4526, excellent corrosion and wear resistance for electrical connectors), decorative chrome plating (6+25 µm, EN ISO 6158, for exposed hardware), matte tin plating (5–15 µm, IEC 60068-2-58, for terminal screws and soldering applications), zinc plating (5–12 µm, EN ISO 2081, for general hardware), clear lacquer / anti-tarnish treatment (for decorative brass hardware), and black nickel plating for specialised applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between brass cold forging and brass hot forging?
Cold forging is performed at room temperature, giving tighter tolerances (±0.01–0.05 mm), better surface finish (Ra 1.6–6.3 µm), work-hardened higher-strength parts, and faster production rates. Hot forging (650–800°C) is better for larger, more complex shapes requiring significant metal deformation. Cold forging is preferred for fasteners, inserts, ferrules, and smaller precision components; hot forging for heavier, bulkier components like valve bodies and flanges.
Which brass grade is best for cold forged cable gland bodies?
CW614N (CZ121, C38500) with 2.5–3.5% lead is the industry-standard choice for cold forged and CNC machined cable gland bodies – excellent cold forgeability, maximum machinability (100% machinability rating), and good corrosion resistance in standard industrial environments. For nickel-plated marine or offshore cable glands, CW617N (CZ122) is preferred for its slightly better corrosion resistance.
Can you supply lead-free brass cold forged parts?
Yes. We supply lead-free brass cold forged parts in CW511L (C69300 Eco Brass), CW724R (DZR CZ132), and C26000 (cartridge brass) for applications requiring RoHS/REACH compliance, NSF/ANSI 61/372 (potable water), or California Prop 65 compliance. Full compliance documentation available.
What is thread rolling on cold forged parts?
Thread rolling is a cold-forming process where the thread form is pressed into the bolt shank by hardened thread rolling dies, not cut by a tap or die. Rolled threads have 30–40% higher fatigue strength than cut threads because the grain flow is uninterrupted and compressive residual stresses are introduced at the root. All our cold headed fasteners use rolled threads as standard.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Prototype orders: 500 pieces minimum. Standard production: 500 kg minimum. For long-term blanket OEM orders, we offer scheduled monthly deliveries with economic order quantities. Tooling charges apply for new components; enquire for tooling cost vs. part price breakeven calculation.
Can you produce brass cold forged parts with internal threads?
Yes. Internal threads on cold forged parts are produced by CNC tapping or thread milling after cold forging. For through-holes, thread rolling with internal thread rollers is available for higher fatigue resistance. Standard thread forms: BSP, NPT, metric, UNC/UNF. Thread tolerance classes: 6H (standard), 5H (precision). 100% go/no-go gauge inspection as standard.
Do you supply PPAP documentation?
Yes. Full PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) Level 3 documentation is available for automotive and high-reliability customers, including dimensional results, material certifications, process capability studies (Cpk ≥ 1.67), control plans, and FMEA reports.
What plating options are available for brass cold forged parts?
Standard options: bright nickel plating (5–25 µm, EN ISO 4526), decorative chrome plating (6+25 µm), matte tin (5–15 µm, IEC 60068-2-58), zinc plating (5–12 µm, EN ISO 2081), and clear anti-tarnish lacquer. Black nickel, silver plating, and gold plating available for specialised applications at additional cost.
What is the production capacity?
Our cold forging facility runs automated multi-station presses capable of producing 60–600 parts per minute per press. Monthly capacity exceeds 500 tonnes of brass cold forged parts across our product range. Capacity planning meetings with key OEM customers ensure priority scheduling and on-time delivery.
Can you supply pre-assembled or sub-assembled cold forged components?
Yes. We can supply cold forged brass components assembled with O-rings, sealing washers, back nuts, or other sub-components as kitted assemblies. This reduces our customers’ assembly labour and inventory complexity. Assembly drawings and quality plans are agreed with customers before production.
